Jawahar
House (now Bharati House)
1970-1979:
In 1971, Admiral S M Nanda, Chief of the Naval Staff was the
Chief Guest in APG. This year, a Girls day boarding House was
started and in 1972 day scholars were converted to day
boarders. Tutors were attached to Houses for the first time.
The college now had four Houses for boys: Ashok & Vikram
for boarders and Rajendra & Jawahar for day boarders.
Mr.
J K Kate succeeded M L Renjan in 1972. He like Renjan was
a former Daly College teacher. He went on to become the
founding Principal of Punjab Public School, Nabha before
returning to DC. He had already been awarded the Padma Shri. In
1972, Barwani House was made Junior Vikram House and Sitamau
House was made Junior Ashok House. In
1972, public spaeking was started for all students at
Assembly. It was later discontinued and then revived in 2003. In
1973, the Junior Classroom block was anaugurated and
was referred to as new Prep School Building. Also inaugurated
was the Junior School Dining Hall. Band was introduced as a
hobby. In
1974, the MP Govt gave a grant for the construction of Jawahar
House (now Bharati House).Other donors for this project were
Mharani Usha Devi & Mr. V N Tody. The foundation stone was
laid bt the APG Chief Guest, President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed.

In
1976, Jawahar House (now Bharati House)
was inaugurated
by Maharaja Dr. Karan Singh of Kashmir, a Cabinet Minister in
the Union Government and a Public School product from Doon. In
1977, part-time sports coaches were engaged. The Central Govt
made Socially Useful Productive Work (SUPW) compulsory in all
schools and so became a regular activity in addition to what
the students in the Social Service League (SSL) were already
doing. Boys now replaced waiters serving at the tables in the
dining hall.
In
1978, the Chief Guest was Jagjivan Ram, Defence Minister of
India. He inaugurated Rajendra House. Construction
started on the new Biology Laboratory. Ajit Pal Singh,
Captain of the Indian Hockeyu team visited in 1978. Mr. Kate
decided to leave in 1978. Between
Mr. Kate and the arrival of next Principal, Mr. H L Dutt, a
former DC teacher, Mr. V N Langer was pulled out of
retirement to fill the gap. In
1979, the Chief Guest at APG was Maharaj Nagendra Singh of
Dungarpur, Vice President and Judge of the International
Court of Justice at the Hague in Holland. He inaugurated the
Science Block
